Yin Yang is a dual concept of Taoist belief, one that tells of how two opposing but interdependent forces exist in all things in the world, living or non-living.


In Naruto, the taijitu (yin yang symbol) can be seen in the divination field of the Hyuga Clan, whose fighting style may have been based on baguazhang, literally eight trigram palm, one of the three Chinese 'internal' martial arts.

On the other hand, the Uchiha Clan’s Sharingan is symbolized by the three tomoe. The mitsu-domoe may also hold a similar meaning to Yin Yang where the three tomoe separately represent earth (yin), heaven (yang) and the union of heaven-and-earth (third tomoe).


Symbolism of Yin and Yang

Yin is characterized by the following, among others:
Female, deficient, passive, dark -- characteristics fitting Hinata
Season: Winter
Element: Water
Numbers: Even

Hinata:
Birth month: December
Season: Winter
Element: ?
Team 8 - 8 is specifically is a minor number of yin

Yang is characterized by the following, among other:
Male, excessive, active, bright -- characteristics fitting Sasuke
Season: Summer
Element: Fire
Numbers: Odd

Sasuke:
Birth month: July
Season: Summer
Element: Fire , Lightning
Team 7 - besides being an odd number, 7 specifically is a minor number of yang.


The Major Numbers of Yin and Yang

8 is the major number of yin while 7 is the major number of yang.

Hinata's team number: 8
Hyuga Clan:
The Hyuga clan and it's members are well known for the use of eight divination signs, hakke (八卦), where hak is synonymous to hachi (八), meaning eight.

Sasuke's team number: 7
Uchiha Clan:
The best kept secret of the Uchiha is the ability of the Mangekyou Sharingan to control the nine-tailed demon. This information was hidden in the Uchiha clan's secret meeting place, located at the Nakano shrine under the seventh tatami mat.


The Minor Numbers of Yin and Yang

6 is the minor number of yin while 9 is the minor number of yang.

Hinata's birth date: December 27 (12 27);
Sasuke's birth date: July 23 (07 23).

When you add these numbers like two halves of a whole, the sum would be 69. Moreover, by it's mere appearance, the number 69 closely resembles the yin yang symbol.


Yin and Yang are Complementary Opposites

Sasuke and Hinata both:
1. - are of noble birth
2. - were born with a bloodline limit, specifically, eye techniques
3. - sought the acknowledgment of a parent

Moreover,
4. Protecting Naruto

Sasuke protected Naruto against Haku


Hinata protected Naruto against Pain


In his anger, Naruto awakens the Nine-Tailed demon fox in him against Haku (Sasuke fight), and fully transforms into Eight-Tails against Pain (Hinata fight; the image below on right shows the six-tailed transformation).


5. Lion technique.

Sasuke developed his own Shishi Rendan (Lion’s Barrage).
Hinata performed a new jutsu named JuuHo: Soushiken, (Gentle Step: Double Lion Fist)



On the other hand, there may also be 'opposition.'

6. Sasuke was born five years younger than Itachi (Uchiha heir) while Hinata (Hyuga heiress) was born five years older than Hanabi.

7. Taijutsu

During the Chuunin preliminaries, Gai compared the difference between Neji and Lee's taijutsu,

Neji : Gentle Fist Yin
Lee : Strong/Iron Fist Yang

Hence, even in comparison of taijutsu,
Hinata : JuuHo: Soushiken, Gentle Fist Yin
Sasuke : Shishi Rendan, based on Lee's Front Lotus, Strong Fist Yang

8. Regarding Naruto 
 

There is a Yang in Yin, and a Yin in Yang.




The Yang in Hinata
The Hyuga may be Yin but Byakugan may be their Yang (light).
Hyuga also means "towards the sun". Sun is a symbol of Yang.

The Yin in Sasuke
The Uchiha may be Yang but Sharingan may be their Yin (dark).
Some members of the Uchiha may be associated to Akatsuki, which can mean "red moon". Moon is a symbol of Yin.

Another example of this concept is the Hyuga Clan, presumed here to be Yin (gentle fist).
Within the Clan, the Main house is Yang while the Branch house is Yin.


This may be seen on the cover of manga ch 078, wherein Hinata is Yang and Neji is Yin;
Similarly, in chapter 102, during Neji's flashback on Hinata's 3rd birthday showed Hiashi and Hinata wearing lighter shade of clothing
surrounded by other Hyuuga in darker tones.

But within the Main House is Hinata, deficient (Yin) in abilities; and within the Branch House is Neji, excessive (Yang) in abilities.
This may also be further depicted by Neji's abilitiy to perform Kaiten (Heavenly Spin, Heaven is Yang) and Hakke Kūshō (Eight Trigrams Empty Palm, where 空 in 八卦空掌 can also mean Sky/Heaven, Heaven is Yang).
Of course, this does not necessarily mean Hinata is unable, but she is yet to perform the said techniques.

In Neji and Hinata's combo technique Hakke Kūhekishō, (八卦空壁掌, Eight Trigrams Empty Wall Palm), consistently, only Neji's hand take the form of Hakke Kūshō and Hinata's form may be accountable for the 'wall' or 'barrier' (壁).





Yin gives way to Yang, Yang gives way to Yin

Upon the peak of Yin is the birth of Yang. Upon the peak of Yang is the birth of Yin.

A classic example of this is the commencement of Yin during the Summer Solstice (full Yang);
and the commencement of Yang during the Winter Solstice (full Yin).



While Hinata may be (theoretically) characterized as Yin, Part II depicts her as overcoming her shy self and was able to confess her feelings for Naruto. To overcome Yang
While Sasuke may be (theoretically) characterized as Yang, Part II depicts him as yielding himself into darkness. To yield Yin.

Other Yin and Yang Features

There is ambiguity, as per author's research, whether the right side is Yin and the left side is Yang. Various literature seem to interchange these two.

However, with reference to Zetsu

Yin - black, Zetsu's right
Yang - white, Zetsu's left

With reference to Sasuke's Sharingan (appearance of second tomoe)

Yin - even number, Sasuke's right
Yang - odd number, Sasuke's left

And with reference to Hinata's JuuHo: Soushiken

Note how the boxed lion seemed to have a relatively closed jaw compared to the other.

JuuHo: Soushiken may possibly be inspired by the komainu (literally, Korean lions), a pair of lions usually found at the entryway of shrines. They are believed to ward off evil, and are almost identical in appearance except one lion has it's mouth closed (komainu, yin counterpart), the other open (shishi, yang counterpart). During the Heian period, they were identified separately but eventually, both became known as komainu.

Hinata and the Right Eye in Ch 437


Ao and his Byakugan

Ao is a nin from the Hidden Village of Mist, Country of Water.
He has an implanted Byakugan on his right eye from a defeated Hyuga opponent.

Sasuke and the Left Eye in Ch 218 and 397, respectively


Kakashi and his Sharingan

Hatake Kakashi is from the Hidden Village Among Tree Leaves, Country of Fire.
He has an implanted Sharingan on his left eye from former teammate Uchiha Obito.


*Combination of two different eye techniques


L: Madara with Sharingan on Right (Yin) and Rinnegan on Left (Yang)
R: Sharingan on Itachi's Right (Yin) and Rinnegan on Nagato's Left (Yang)

Similarly, although likely irrelevant, in an interview wherein Mr. Kishimoto was asked, "If a Hyuga and an Uchiha had a child together, what eyes would s/he get?"
Mr. Kishimoto answers, "His right eye would be a Sharingan. Meaning that the left one would be a Byakugan!"

Again,


This, however, should not be confused with the emphasis of Hinata's right eye (Yin) and Sasuke's left eye (Yang), as both only have either Byakugan and Sharingan respectively.
